Nicole Hensley earned this assignment for Team USA

Nicole Hensley comes in as USA’s starter, rocking a .942 save percentage so far. She won the crease over Maddie Rooney and Aerin Frankel, and this is a familiar position for her seeing as she was between the pipes at this time last year in the gold medal game.

Against Canada in the prelims, Hensley stopped 26 of 28 shots against.

Emerance Maschmeyer was in for Canada, not Desbiens; she allowed four goals on 32 shots against as USA challenged her with a lot of tips and deflections in front.

Hailey’s prediction

As a Canadian, I hate to say this, but I do think Team USA comes into this final as the team to beat. They’ve scored 52 goals in their first six games of the tournament. Sure, some of those games were against weaker opponents, but Canada didn’t look as good against those very same teams. The U.S. is deep and dangerous. BUT, Canada has Marie-Philip Poulin, who has been the dagger against the U.S. several times at the Worlds and Olympics.

Anything can happen in these Canada-U.S. gold medal games, but boy, do the Americans look like a tough out for Canada.

U.S. women’s team agrees to short-term extension with USA Hockey

Members of the U.S. women’s hockey team agreed to a short-term contract extension with USA Hockey on Wednesday, a source confirmed to The Athletic.

The parties agreed that USA Hockey will continue to fund the players as they work to finalize a longer-term deal and will allow the players to focus on winning gold at the world championship tournament in the meantime.

“It gives everybody a little bit of breathing room,” the players’ lawyer, Dee Spagnuolo, said, according to the Associated Press. “We will use that month to focus on issues of critical importance to the players. In the meantime, the players are focusing on gold.”

‘I’m not done’: Meaghan Mikkelson’s unrelenting push to make Team Canada’s roster

Meaghan Mikkelson — after giving birth to her daughter Berkley in 2019 — was cut from the team in 2020 ahead of the world championship that was ultimately canceled due to COVID-19. Then, she was cut from the 2022 Olympic team that won gold in Beijing after a catastrophic knee injury kept her out for all but 12 days of the tryout process.

She thought about retiring both times, but the idea of hanging up her skates was always short-lived.

Shayna’s prediction

Predicting a USA gold medal win after the tournament they’ve had. Would anyone be surprised if it was a 3-2 finish for tradition’s sake?

Canada at Women’s Worlds: What did we learn after the preliminary round, loss to USA?

The No. 1 IIHF-ranked team in the world was undefeated at the 2021 world championship, was a perfect 7-0 at the 2022 Olympics, and started the 2022 world championship with a 3-0 record before losing to Team USA by a score of 5-2 in Tuesday’s finale of the group stages.

Sure, we could panic about the lopsided score. Or how dangerous the U.S. team looked — because, boy, they look good — but, sometimes, context matters.

Hilary Knight has reached ‘legendary status’, but will she go down as the best ever?

Hilary Knight was told that her teammate Kendall Coyne Schofield had called her one of the greatest players to ever play women’s hockey.

“How do you feel when you hear something like that?”

“That’s terrifying,” Knight laughed. “No way. Cammi (Granato) is the GOAT.”

What happened in the last U.S.-Canada meeting

Team USA scored five unanswered goals to defeat Canada 5-2 on Tuesday in the preliminary round.

It was the first time Canada lost a game at a major event since the 2019 world championships.

First loss at a major event for coach Troy Ryan, too.
