The Chicago Bears returned to Halas Hall on Saturday morning for their fourth practice of training camp, which is another practice open to fans.
With media and fans in attendance, there’s plenty to keep an eye on during Saturday’s practice, which is the final workout before the pads come on Monday. That includes developments with the offensive line with Lucas Patrick and Teven Jenkins sidelined, Justin Fields looking to build on a strong outing and rookie ballhawks Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker continuing to impress.
Here are some instant observations from those in attendance at the Bears’ fourth practice of training camp:
Practice has concluded.
Still no sign of Teven Jenkins at practice, who Matt Eberflus said is working through something “with trainers.” Didn’t spot Thomas Graham either. TE Chase Allen and DL Angelo Blackson are here but not practicing.
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 30, 2022
Roquan Smith and Angelo Blackson just arrived to practice. Doesn’t look like Blackson is practicing today. Obviously Smith isn’t, but he with the linebackers.

Velus Jones Jr. just cooked #39. My goodness. #BearsCamp
— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) July 30, 2022
Justin to Velus Jones 40 yards downfield!!!
Velus with the burners with huge seperation!
— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) July 30, 2022
Jaylon Johnson had perfect coverage on Byron Pringle. Johnson nearly had the INT but couldn’t come down with the catch.
— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 30, 2022
The Bears have constantly rotated their starting offensive line throughout the offseason program and now into training camp. But it’s clear this regime likes its four linemen selected in the draft. That group has seen plenty of opportunities thus far.

A couple of crowd pleasing deep balls for Justin Fieldw in one on ones this AM.
60-yard TD to Isaiah Coulter.
Also, EASY bomb and catch thanks to Velus Jones’ jets. Oooooh-weeee.
— Dan Wiederer (@danwiederer) July 30, 2022
Duke Shelley made a nice play against Darnell Mooney in 1-on-1s. Shelley knocked the ball out of Mooney’s hands at the end of the route.

This is the extent of the practice video you’ll get from me today. A Justin Fields pass…to a staff member. pic.twitter.com/vrd7vnv6TM
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 30, 2022
The one on one featured a nice interception from Kyler Gordon, a nice batted ball from Duke Shelley, a long bomb to Velus, another to Coutler, a fingertip grab by Ryan Griffin, a precise route and catch from Chris Finke, and another by Kevin Shaa. #Bears
— Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. (@wiltfongjr) July 30, 2022
Nice ball from Trevor Siemian on an out route to N’Keal Harry, and Harry went up and plucked it out of the air. #Bears
— Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. (@wiltfongjr) July 30, 2022
Fumble on the exchange with Montgomery.
Not sure if it would’ve been play action or not. I’m assuming so. pic.twitter.com/CI3DJeyZtj
— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) July 30, 2022
Team drills — Justin Fields fumbles. Sloppiness at the mesh point w Montgomery on a read option handoff.
As @markcraignfl likes to say, “Got to get that cleaned up.”
— Dan Wiederer (@danwiederer) July 30, 2022
It’s not live… but so far the defensive pressure has been getting to Justin Fields a lot in this team session. #Bears
— Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. (@wiltfongjr) July 30, 2022
Defense is dominating 11 on 11s. No one’s getting open
— Chicago Football Connection (@CFCBears) July 30, 2022
Morrow with an ALMOST INT in the flat intended for Montgomery. Morrow almost picked it off.
Rough start so far in 11 on 11s for the offense.
— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) July 30, 2022
Bears continue to mix in offensive linemen during team period. Reiff, Whitehair, Mustipher, Schofield and Borom get the first crack with the ones. Rookies Jones (LT) and Carter (RG) mix in with the ones next.
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 30, 2022
Lot of scrambling early in team drills. Pressure from the defense, good coverage. #DaBears pic.twitter.com/eucimflbGM
— Jeff Berckes (@gridironborn) July 30, 2022
Couple of early turnovers for Justin Fields on Day 4 of camp.
Kyler Gordon made a nice play to pick off a pass on 1-on-1 drills.
Then in 11-on-11s there was a fumbled exchange between Fields and Montgomery.
Nick Morrow was very close to coming away with a pick of his own.
— Alex Shapiro (@AlexShapiroNBCS) July 30, 2022
Nicholas Morrow was close to getting a pick-6 on Justin Fields in team drills. Morrow jumped the route in the flat that was intended for David Montgomery. Eddie Jackson blitzed on the play.
— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 30, 2022
Justin Fields and Velus Jones just connected for one of the more impressive plays in team drills today.
Kyler Gordon had Jones pretty well covered downfield, but Fields put the ball in the perfect spot, Jones extended and came down with the catch.

The Peanut Punch mentality on every ball carrier by every defender he runs past continues. #Bears

Justin Fields and Velus Jones Jr. have connected on 2 nice deep balls today – during individuals where Jones showed off that 4.3 speed and another moments ago in 11/11. Didn’t see who the DB in coverage was but Fields launched one down the left sideline and Jones came down w it.
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 30, 2022
Crisp route run by Byron Pringle as he got himself open in coverage and Justin Fields found him. Curious to see how that connection can develop in camp.

Pringle over the middle!#DaBears pic.twitter.com/RAuda2km4V
— Jeff Berckes (@gridironborn) July 30, 2022
Veteran newcomers Riley Reiff (left tackle) and Michael Schofield (right guard) are getting more of a workload in team drills after being eased in by the Bears. With Lucas Patrick out, Sam Mustipher and Doug Kramer are rotating at center.
— Chris Emma (@CEmma670) July 30, 2022
Chicago Lamar Jackson continues. Great Int off a tipped ball against the #2 offense #chicagobears @TTNLNetwork
— Alex Acevedo (@AlexAce519) July 30, 2022
Sam Kamara (DE) with a really nice pass rush against Shon Coleman for a sack in 11 on 11s
— Chicago Football Connection (@CFCBears) July 30, 2022
Justin Fields dropped his throwing motion sidearm to fit it in to Khalil Herbert over the middle… but it was dropped. #Bears
— Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. (@wiltfongjr) July 30, 2022
A little flip end around to Velus that the defense sniffed out. #Bears
— Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. (@wiltfongjr) July 30, 2022
#Bears head coach Matt Eberflus stopped practice for a moment to address fans. Led a 1 … 2 … 3 … “Bear down” chant
— Sean Hammond (@sean_hammond) July 30, 2022
Matt Eberflus just grabbed the mic ahead of the 10th period of practice and addressed fans at training camp.
“It’s back together Saturday in the NFL…and I’ve got to get back to practice.”
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 30, 2022
Matt Eberflus addresses the crowd at Halas Hall, leads the fans into a “Bear Down!” #BearsCamp pic.twitter.com/LlAI0lyH88
— Funky Cold Luda (@lcm1986) July 30, 2022
It is just the first week of training camp but it’s clear the #Bears offense is gaining traction and quickly putting it all together. A positive with QB Justin Fields leading the way.
— Usayd (@usaydkoshul) July 30, 2022
Dominique Robinson getting some run with the #1 defense
— Chicago Football Connection (@CFCBears) July 30, 2022
All you need to know about #BearsCamp today: Justin Fields looks like a stud in practice. #QB1
— Ben Devine (@Chicago_NFL) July 30, 2022
Braxton Jones shuts down Dominique Robinson. Fields overthrows Mooney. Very tight coverage by Tavon Young
— Chicago Football Connection (@CFCBears) July 30, 2022
The true flashes from the Bears offense have been few and far between this week.
For me, the clunkiness has been particularly glaring this morning.
— Dan Wiederer (@danwiederer) July 30, 2022
Bears offense incredibly clunky today. Velus Jones with a couple nice catches , one in individual drills and one in 11 on 11. Lots of work on the run game. Fields and Montgomery botched a handoff at one point.
— Josh Schrock (@Schrock_And_Awe) July 30, 2022
Fields threads the needle to Byron Pringle in zone coverage
— Chicago Football Connection (@CFCBears) July 30, 2022
Cairo Santos makes the extra point. 7-0 Bears over Bears
— Chicago Football Connection (@CFCBears) July 30, 2022
Bears end practice with a situational period. Fields spikes the ball with 8 seconds left on the clock then runs in a touchdown on the final play of the drive. PAT good. Practice over.
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 30, 2022
These developments and the spring have given Larry Borom the inside path for the RT job. Keep in mind everything can change – and quickly – when full pads finally go on next week.
— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) July 30, 2022
Add’l observations from practice No. 4:
-Offense still looks like a work in progress, which is what coaches/players have iterated this week. Up and down day of execution. Good moments (Fields throw to Jones in team), some eh.
-Reiff, Schofield getting consistent reps in team
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 30, 2022
#Bears practice is over. Best thing I saw but couldn’t photograph: Trevor Siemian throwing the ball into a bucket (with netting) from 40 yards away. Twice. pic.twitter.com/vfkpMcWGks
— Patrick Finley (@patrickfinley) July 30, 2022
Today was not a great day for the Bears offense, but both Velus Jones and Darnell Mooney popped a couple of times.
— Alex Shapiro (@AlexShapiroNBCS) July 30, 2022
Velus Jones Jr. was my standout on offense today. Made a few good plays out there connecting with Justin Fields. #Bears
— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 30, 2022
Kinda a blah day for the #Bears offense today IMO. Some highlights in 1 on 1. But team stuff wasn’t very good outside of a few big plays.
